Bands for Liverpool PsychFest (4) – The Oscillation

Oscillation-FB

Another band that I am looking forward to seeing at the Liverpool International Festival of Psychedelia are The Oscillation. Surely if you did not know what sort of band they were you could guess by the name. It is a very good name for the band too as, in many ways, it sums them up.

The Oscillation were formed by Demian Castellanos (The Orichalc Phase) and play a dizzy mixture of psychedelic wig-outs, dub/ reggae and trip hop inspired pop and bass-heavy space rock; with a bit of sci-fi style acoustic guitar thrown in (the sort that depicts a scene where you know danger is just around the corner). The blips and wahs very much remind me of the patterns that I remember from the school oscillator. I would never go as far as saying that any band is unique, but I certainly do not know anyone quite like them.

Like The Lucid Dream, who I wrote about earlier in this series, The Oscillation are a band who wear their influences lightly but proudly. Telepathic Birdman (great title), from the great second album Veils (2011), has, like much of the album, a real reggae vibe Clash-style, but with a Happy Mondays vocal and the sort of guitar work that would not go amiss on a 90s Rave album (is it really influences by Northside’s, er..trippy, Shall We Take A Trip?, or have I missed a trick), while Liquid Memoryman, from their excellent 2007 debut album, Out of Phase is a brilliant slice of dub rock. Yet in other places, such as track On The Run, you get a full-on Floyd/ Krautrock exposition of sound.

They third album, From Tomorrow, comes out at the end of September and I am very much looking forward to hearing tracks from it at the Festival (and hopefully copies of the limited white vinyl pressing of 500 will be there too), the press release suggests it is “an attempt to find some kind of new mental and spiritual zones, away from the psychological effects of the modern urban landscape, and the curious emptiness of the digital social world that we are forced to inhabit”, and with art work by Julian Hand to match – bring it on!

This is the third in my series of posts about bands that I have found while going through the bill of the Liverpool International Festival of Psychedelia. Do not forget that you can also follow my research as I gradually add to my Spotify playlist “PsychBest” (click on the link or search “PsychBest on Spotify) which includes tracks from those who are appearing at the Liverpool Fesitval, along with a couple who are not but whom I have also discovered along the way.
