Pop should not be a dirty word! That’s a pretty big statement from a guy who is rapidly approaching his half century and loses the plot if he hears somebody turn on Radio One or one of those commercial stations that sends out the same 20 songs on a continuous loop.
I say it’s not a dirty word because my formative years were 1978 to 1985. These were the years when Pop was king and I’m not talking in a boy band style or the Stock Aitkin and Waterman type of formula that dragged the late eighties into a music abyss. I’m talking a time when Pop music was fused with New Wave, Post Punk, SKA and Electro. They were heady days. Anything was possible and the next big thing could fly in from any direction possible. It was a time of revolution.
Well it’s been a long time since those beautiful days. We’ve had some highs and an awful lot of lows and my frown is now a permanent fixture across my brow as all I seem to ever hear about is the latest reality TV star and who the awful Simon Cowell is going to turn into an X Factor five second wonder. Give me strength!
But I’m an optimist and I never give up hope and every now and then I stumble across a gem, music I want to tell the World about. It’s usually something from far left field that no matter how much I personally enjoy I know that not that many of the friends I have left will take on board. So it’s into my car and off on my own, lost in my own little World….
Enough of all that though, I have found a band that I’m sure so many people will just love and heavens above I really think I can also class them as a Pop band. And I truly mean that in the glory days of Electro Pop that started it all off for me all those years ago. They are called LOW TIDE THEORY and they bring beauty to my life. Uplifting music that reminds me of lazy summer days, when the only thing I had to worry about was how I was going to get my hands on the latest Depeche Mode single.
LOW TIDE THEORY deserves to be the summer sound of 2013. Modern Electro beats and uplifting fresh vocals sprinkled with the best memories of OMD, New Order, Depeche Mode, Heaven 17 and the Pet Shop Boys. If you like your music with a hint of those days then you are in for an absolute treat with these guys. Three lads from Devon who have hit the nail on the head when it comes to mixing the best retro vibe with a modern day sound. They really do deserve to succeed and take back the good name of Pop from the devil. There is a future and I am sold.
Time Will Tell
They have an album just out and it deserves to be championed. ‘BIG SKY’ is available now and it needs to be heard. Every track is real quality. No slow burners, these tunes get straight into the blood stream and it’s just like being transported onto the set of the best John Hughes movie. I would love to give you a few standout tracks but honestly I love it all so I’m just going say buy the album. You will not be disappointed.
If John was still about then Low Tide Theory would be all over his soundtracks and believe me that’s as good as it gets in my mind. I for one will be turning this album up high and reminiscing of Molly Ringwald and Ally Sheedy in their heyday. Its music that’s going to keep this grumpy music snob very happy and it’s got my summer sorted…. Thanks guys.
